WHFS: Incubus Drummer Jose Pasillas Makes Rhythm The Medium With New Art Installation

For the last 20 years, Jose Pasillas has traveled the world as a collaborative anchor in one of rock music’s most critically applauded and commercially successful bands, as the drummer of Incubus. Revered for his work on the skins, Pasillas is now garnering praise for work in a whole new medium.
Describing himself plainly as a lifelong student of all things artistic, Pasillas, while delivering the percussion on everything Incubus has ever recorded, has always continued his passion for visual art. From CD artwork to band gear, fans of Incubus have likely seen Pasillas’ work and just never knew it. As news of the band’s hiatus broke this last summer, it seems as though Pasillas is ready to emerge from behind the drum kit into an all new spotlight. Harnessing the same love for music that has made him one of the genre’s most respected names, Pasillas has created a visual experience that manages to freezeframe rhythm in a way few others have imagined. Jose Pasillas has always been an artist, however, this time, he is going at it all on his own.
Drummer Cafe
Jose Pasillas’ first day as a drummer was his first day in Incubus, the band he formed with high school buddies. 20 years later, Incubus is a multi-platinum, Billboard Award-winning critical and commercial favorite, and Pasillas is one of music’s most respected drummers. Now, the Calabasas High graduate whose only form of training was “two years of air drums” continues to divine a unique path through art with the announcement of ‘Abstract + Rhythm Landscapes’, his first full collection of fine art, where drumsticks are paintbrushes and canvas becomes a vessel of sound through the innovations of SceneFour, the Los Angeles creativity house trailblazing the borders of sound and vision.

‘Art Of Drums’: capturing percussion on canvas Matt Sorum, Stephen Perkins, Frankie Waddy participating
from Drummerzone
What would a picture of your favorite song look like? The ‘Art Of Drums’ can finally answer that question. It is a collection of fine art spearheaded by creativity house SceneFour in collaboration with ten of the world’s greatest drummers.
On July 22, the ‘Art Of Drums’ collection featuring former Guns ‘n Roses/Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum will premiere a groundbreaking method of capturing percussion on canvas.
How it’s done
Hundreds of drum bursts are recorded, reduced to light impulses, digitized, evaluated by several photographers, graphic artists and all under the direction of the music artist.
An experienced team of creatives spends over 100 hours creating a unique product mammoth in size, stunning in composition. SceneFour creative director Cory Danziger states:
‘This is something different than what people are used to seeing. It’s a new medium. It’s not acrylic or oil, it’s light and color and sound captured. The rhythm is on display for you to see.”
Following Matt Sorum’s release will be drum art collections releases by ten of of the world’s best drummers.
Rick Allen of Def Leppard, Stephen Perkins of Jane’s Addiction, Frankie “Kash” Waddy of Parliament/Funkadelic and six other mystery drummers are each creating individual collections of 100 epic-sized canvases to be released every other month for 20 months.
Each drummer will release ten different pieces, each of which will be presented in ten one-of-a-kind drafts, all numbered and signed.
The Art of Drums is the brainchild of art house SceneFour, the team behind collaborative artwork with The RZA of Wu-Tang Clan, Chuck D of Public Enemy, Bootsy Collins, TLC, Hieroglyphics, Fishbone, Helmet and George Lynch. For inquiries about the collection, visit www.theartofdrumsproject.com.
Velvet Revolver’s Matt Sorum Launches Art Collection
from Noisecreep

Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum recently unveiled an art collection, using drumsticks as his muse.
Sorum used his drumsticks to create a series on canvas. The pieces study both the rhythm of light and performance.
“I never considered myself an artist in that form until it was brought to my attention that it could be done,” Sorum said in a recent interview. “You know the sticks relate to brush strokes… Great artists have a different feel from each other, nobody is similar, everyone has a different take on things and it comes through in the movement.”
There are a total of five different visual pieces in the collection to choose from. Of these, there will be 130 drafts for sale and those will be signed and numbered.
If you are a fan of art and Sorum, be sure to check out his work. The collection will be available in select galleries across America and Europe beginning in September.
